Formed by the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in the 2000s, Diving in the lake street has been a staple of the soul-rock scene, distinguished by its jazz prowess and genre transcendence. They hit the big time with their singles “Good Kisser” and “Rich Girl” from their 2018 album Free yourself, only to save it with their latest collection, Obviously.
This seventh studio album is far from obvious. It covers topics such as femininity, the end of the world, playing with relationships and teenage self-image; as well as bringing on board an extraordinary producer Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem, 21 Pilots) to push their sound repertoire.
Obviously is also the first offer to introduce the new official member of the group, Akie Bermiss, who has been a member of The Keys Tour with the band since 2017. Rachel Prize (main voice), Mike “McDuck” Olson (trumpet, guitar), Bridget kearney (low) and Mike Calabrese (drums) Akie is the most credited member in the writing process of this album.
I sat down with Rachael to talk about the process of putting this album together, writing style techniques across the band, and sharing experiences for women.
